I am marinizing a Ford 302 from a 1978 pickup truck and putting it into a Shamrock that had a 302 in it, do I have to change the cam out? Not sure if the cam in the Shamrockis the right one, the engine was missing too many parts to make it run, that is why we decided to swap out.

Re: cam change out

If the cam in the pick-up was the stock Pick-up cam, then It probably would be ok. Truck cams were close to marine cams if not the same. Use new lifters.

I think it was the stock cam, I pulled the cam on the marine block while I was waiting for replies, wasn't too bad of a job, it looks good but no markings to tell what it is.

Thanks guys will do that, what is the situation over the distributor, do you have to put a marine one in, I am putting the marine carb and the starter, does the distributor need to be marine also?

Re: cam change out

When I got the Shamrock, the owners before me pulled everything off the engine except the block, heads and intake manifold. They took the rockers, lifters and rods out and threw them away to lighten the load to remove the engine from the boat, so since so much was missing and they left the engine sit for 6 years, I bought the truck and I am swapping it out. I have read a lot of the forums and found them to be very informative, so I am giving it the go, have the t ruck engine all cleaned up and I am going to NAPA today to order the gasket set and check carb prices and maybe even the starter, but my NAPA friend said the starters he is getting lately for marine are regular starters and coated with silicone, heard anything on that?

Re: cam change out

A Marine Starter has an Extra Steel Plate in the body of the starter, to contain the sparks.........
Silicone or not......
The Newer "High-Torque" starters are the Same, Auto vs. Marine................
