Have you "moderator's" considered creating an FAQ thread for emergency on the water fixes, as well as hardware store solutions? Alternate solutions to waiting for a part to arrive in the mail. I also believe that there is an incredible parts mark up. How packaging and a niche market can result in a $3.25 o-ring.

I made up this cam follower roller last night from the bins at my local big box store. Total cost: less than a $1.

3/8" i.d. vinyl tubing and a nylon bushing. Had to cut the bushing to length. Warm up the tubing in a hot water to make it easier to slip over the bushing. I don't imagine the vinyl will hold up that well over time compared to the original roller, but I still have 11" of the 1' of tubing I bought. We'll see how it performs. The outside diameter is slightly larger than the original (less than a 1/32")

Thank all of you so much. Enjoy

You should have asked. I've got one collecting dust and taking up space in a bolt bin.

You had that stuff on your boat? No? Is there a dealer in your town? I guess I don't see how this is an emergency on the water fix. The dealer could have sold you the proper part. Am I missing something here? And how much is your time worth? Seems to me that $3.25 is a pretty small price for the right part. Maybe that's just me, though.

Re: cam follower roller-evinrude 18hp

Excuse me I was not very clear.

1. Possible FAQ thread suggestion: Interesting and crafty solutions on the water or in the shop. Not involving a trip to your local marine, or waiting on parts to arrive.

2. This was not done on the water. I was finishing up work on the motor and was crossing "T"'s and dotting "I"'s. Doing those little "I should fix that while I'm at it" sort of things. This was one of them

3. Thanks for the offer 14'grumman, that's very kind of you, I'll see how this turns out.

4. The $3.25 o-ring is not this part, just an example of how parts for these motors are sometimes quite a rip off. That o-ring packaged and sold for another purpose where demand for it is higher, the price would be much less.

5. What is time worth?

I was simply trying to share an idea. And wondered if others have stumbled on inventive solutions to share as well.

Sure. We've all cobbled up things to temporarily fix something. However, even you mentioned that your makeshift roller probably wouldn't hold up very long, and I'd agree, having seen the photo. The correct part costs about $10. It's a common part, and your local Evinrude dealer almost certainly has it in stock.

A FAQ on ways to fix things with baling wire and stuff probably wouldn't help people all that much, and those fixes are almost always only temporarily successful. The resourceful person will figure that stuff out when needed.

Also, some temporary or makeshift repairs end up causing more problems than they solve. The correct parts, installed properly, never do that. So, if you want to just make your outboard run a little while to save a couple of bucks, you'll be doing the same thing over and over again. What's the point of that?

Beyond that, what happens when a makeshift repair fails out in the middle of the lake or other water when a storm's coming in? You see the problem? Fixing things properly ends up saving money, makes engines reliable to operate, and does no damage. Those are pretty good goals, I think.

I don't see the harm in trying. I thought your first response was essentially criticism minus the constructive. Give me your thoughts as to why it might fail. Build your case, I'm not looking for cheerleaders nor judges, just input from others who have found themselves having to create a solution. When simply buying one is not an option at that moment
The article on "wobbly armature plate fix" is just that, a fix. It doesn't replace the worn material. It just delays the inevitable replacement. But it seems an acceptable and highly referenced thread (although difficult to find)
The long term durability of the vinyl tubing has me curious. The inner
bushing I am not worried about. I suppose I'll find out.
I may be overly sensitive (slightly paranoid), but I do believe I have been indirectly told that my thoughts are not welcomed, and the earth is flat.

It looks like a reasonable fix. But the vinyl will wear through relatively soon I would think. I have never changed one of the rollers and have over 60 engines though. So I know I have lots of spares.

The earth is flat? Dang... Bugs Bunny was right for all these years!
