Background: 5.0 mercruiser replaced heads w/ Vortec. new intake, rebuilt carb, installed thermostat (was missing), checked impeller (replaced last july) .

I hooked muffs but did not see water exiting behind prop. Is this normal? or does tstat have to open for water to exit.
Just want to make sure water is circulating and not to overheat engine

Water doesn't have to come out of the prop, there are two holes next to the transom. The pic below is not the best but shows water coming out next to the transom, these are the relief ports with an Alpha drive

What drive do you have?

Boat ran correctly last fall. I'm thinking tube from pump to upper unit did not seat properly when I reassembled upper to lower drive

I do not see water coming out there

So the muffs are on the drive, the water is on full open, and your not seeing any water? If so not good.
It would take a short time (no more then 2 minutes at idle) to fill the block and have the water start coming out. So if you gave it that much then there is an issue with the impeller replacement
