Camera got wet

Tonight, after viewing fireworks on the lake with a zillion other boaters, a wake came over my bow as I was putt-putt-putting back to dock. My sister's Kodak digital camera got wet, and now doesn't work. I've removed the battery. Will it likely work in the morning after it dries out? Do I owe her a new camera?

Re: Camera got wet

was it fresh or salt water?
if it was fresh water you have a better chance of it comming back.
if it was salt water chances are not good.
I have clean some wet electronics with 90% iso. alchohol (you may have to take the covers off first) and let it sit for a few days in a hot area ...90-110 deg area.
Thats my best suggestion.

Was the power on or off when it go wet. If it was on, you might as well head to the store. That 90% iso. alchohol is a good idea. A careful blow out with compressed air might help. Don't power it up until you're sure it;s dry. Water alone won;t hurt electronics.

Re: Camera got wet

Thanks, folks.

Fresh water, thank God. The camera was off. By 11pm, there were no "wet spots" to dry, but the shutter wouldn't close. This morning, It did open & close a few times, though the LCD screen showed bright white, mostly. Now, it won't even turn on- I'm hoping the battery just needs charging. I'll ask her to try the alcohol, as we're heading home soon.

Which leaves the morality question - do guests bring their stuff on board at their own risk? Is that the standard thinking? For which kinds of things should the boat owner accept responsibility? As this is my sister, and we were staying at her lakeside house, I'll replace her camera. But for other guests, what's the protocol?

Take the battery out now, leave the door open, put both into a zip-lock baggie with damp-rid and leave it for a minimum of 24 hours. I recovered mine doing this but it is important that the battery contacts can dry as well.

How big of a wake was it? The other boater is 100% responsible for there wake. Rember? Haha
