CAN 1988 CARB BE USED ON 1985 MOTOR (BOTH 15 HP)

I need to replace carb on my 1985 15 HP Johnson and I have a seized 1988 15 HP Evinrude. My current carb has the older style metal top whereas the 1988 has the black plastic top cover. My 1985 has the idle adjustment knob on the side of the lower cowling (btw, poor engineering) and the newer outboards have done away with this knob (as is the case with my 1988). First off, can I use the newer carb and secondly, can someone also tell me how to adjust the idle on my newer carb since the side-knob-adjustment no longer is used.

The side adjustment is simply a stop to adjust how low the idle will go. Has nothing to do with setting the carb.

And to answer your other question, yes, the carb will bolt right up.

Thanks for input.

My use of the term 'adjustment' was vague and I should have used your term 'stop'. That said, is there a 'stop' adjustment on this updated carb ... I assume it will jump out at me once I runup the motor ... ehhh ... engine ... hmmmm, outboard.

The stop has nothing to do with the carb. It operates on the tiller handle linkage. The carb cares not a whit what the stop is doing...

Agreed there is no stop adjustment on the carburetor itself.---Why would you say the idle stop adjustment on the lower cowling is " poor engineering "------On the newer motors the idle stop is in the end of the throttle handle and as far as I am concerned that is near impossible to repair.----Easy for the factory to assemble the motor when new, not user friendly for the owner !!!!

Thank you both. Additionally, thank you for answering my original query "can someone also tell me how to adjust the idle" "with your response "On the newer motors the idle stop is in the end of the throttle handle" I did not realize that the idle adjustment stop was in the handle since the operation of the tiller handle and the motor was inoperable (my 1988 is seized, as previously described).

With respect to the 'poor engineering' comment ... two wrongs don't make a right and it appears the engineers went from the frying pan to the fire. I'm not familar with the tiller operation but the older design could easily have been improved with a 'fork' or 'yolk' style brass guide which would have cradled the nylon adjustment screw therefore preventing it from twisting. With time, it begins to become loose & floppy then inevitably binds.

FWIW ... I was only attempting to use the terminology found on the majority of retail sites (see picture).

You must understand manufacturing !-------Motors are painted and then some parts are added afterwards.----The idle stop on the lower cowling is an example of that.-----There is nothing wrong with that idle stop set-up on the early 9.9 models.
