I just acquired a mint 72 Johnson 25 hp motor and was wondering if I could convert it to cdi using a 83 up parts motor for all the parts

My opinion.-----Your motor has the wonderfully simple universal magneto installed for over nearly 40 years.----It is a very reliable / easy / cheap to maintain system.----Failure of one side will allow motor to run on one cylinder.-------There is lots of good information available if you want to learn about this magneto.------For one thing I do not believe the 83 flywheel, will fit on a 72 motor.----It does require that you do periodic maintenance and store the motor in the proper place in the off season.----Parts for it are available at nearly every shop.

You might investigate conversion kits for lawnmowers. Years ago there was a square green module that you bolted in place of the points, that had the same function. That still used the condenser and original coil.

Maybe there is something newer now.

As Racer says...magneto/point ignitions rarely fail.

Magneto / points can fail.-----But they usually give you warning that simple work is needed.------If one cylinder fails , the other one will get you home.----Electronic ignition fails like a light bulb without warning and can only be fixed with $$$ parts if avaiable.

Find a motor with electronic ignition.--------There are many benefits to owning that light weight 1972 model 25 HP motor.

well so far I found where the guy I got the motor from did put new points and condensors in it, coils look brand new , he attempted to make a home made flywheel key which was way too small so the points cam and flywheel were both out of time , reset points bought a new flywheel key starts right up and has very strong blue spark, both plugs were no good, borrowed the two jc4 plugs from my 14 Evinrude commercial and fired right up, I still need to get the timing plate and carb sync info
