1985 Suzuki 65

I was running my motor I just bought for the first time Friday evening. I have idled it for 30 minutes or so on the hose at my house and checked a few things out etc, watering correctly.

I went to go "test" it on friday and it started making a clunking sound so I turned around for the dock, we almost made it.... But the wind picked up and blew us far far away.. but that's another story.

I looked at the spark plugs the next day and they are clean "toast" colored like new plugs would look in a 4-stroke... I figured this meant the the oil injection had failed somehow? Is this possible? The water sensor alarm works in the head everytime I start it so I asumed the oil sensor would work too if ti wasn't getting oil. The tank was full.

Can I fix this or am I out of luck. The motor still turns over and that was the first time it had been run WOT in a year since the steering cable had been broke.

Any suggestions?

when was the last time the oil tank was cleaned and filter screen was replaced? I dont think I have ever seen the mikuni oil pump on a suzuki actually fail but I see a lot killed by customer issues. the manual says to bleed the system and run premix after storage periods of over 6 months. was that procedure followed ?
if any mechanical damage was done it cannot be reversed without opening it up and repairing it.
however it could have been a carb issue, how did it run at WOT ? have you checked the gearcase oil ?

The boat and motor are new to me so I would have to say I doubt the oil screen was cleaned or replaced. I should have run premix I'm kicking my self for trusting the former owner but I'm new too injection systems.

It ran fine at wot and idled well. i know the gear oil was changed every year and no sign of water in it.

Where is the oil screen?

There is a very little chance of a suzuki oil pump failing, but never the less things do happen, I suggest you run it with premix and check how it runs, that is if your engine isn't fried, did no heat or oil warnigs come on at all?

Hey ebsworj, looks like you guys had fun on your trip around Vancouver Island ... you guys should plan a trip to South Africa where the booze is cheap and fish is plenty ....

DJC. Thanks, but I won't be taking you up on the offer. Saw too many movies about bad storms down there and being caught in the ocean in a gale is not my idea of fun.

Mark

I'd love to come to South Africa sometime, maybe for surfing or somthing. Cheap booze and fish are exactly what I look for in a place.

Update: I pulled off the head and the cylinders look fine, there is some oil residue in there I was suprised. Too bad I broke 5 bolts off getting the head off. My head gasket looks horrible. If that fails will my motor stop?

It did make a clunking sound as it was stopping could that be the crank shaft?

Pulling this motor apart is a pain in the ***! I don't think it has been opened up since 1985 and its spent most of its life in the salt. Many bolts are corroded in place.

No that is on the west coast of SOuth africa in the Atlantic ocean, you must go to the east coast, the indian ocean is nice and calm, we are so lucky here we have 2 oceans ...

The surf here is one of the best in the world, surfers from the US come here all the time and South Africa is soo cheap because the currency here is R6.75 - $1 and the chicks in Cape Town is really really hot ... much hotter than the brazilians .... anyway .. Saltwater always causes great discomfort for these engines, I suggest you clean the engine nicely and rebuild the powerhead with all new gaskets etc. will run like a brand new engine ...
