Today out on the lake I noticed the boat was going a little slower then usual, so after I anchored I took the motor cover off checked the spark plug wires and stuff everything was good>

During the week I decided to put the air filter covers on(I was running the boat without airfilters which is the way I bought it) Well I thought I will see what happens if I took them off....since before I would run 35mph, with the covers on 30mph, took them back off I got 35mph again, then I left the motor cover off and I got about 38mph.....

Any body know whats going on? Motor seems to not be getting enough air or something??

Most outboards dont have air filter. (due to a lack of dust and dirt on the water)

When you install an air filter, this block the air from entering the engine. Less air, equals less power.

Those black covers are there to keep big stuff out.If there is a difference when you put on the cover then your leaking exhaust into the cowl or the air ports are restricted.I'd go with the first one.No idea why there is a difference with the black covers.J

At least it's an outboard engine with air filter experiment. Inboard engines have them to serve as a backflame arrestor.
