Can anyone help?

Guys, I got a quick question. I have 87 mercury classic fifty, and I was installing my starter pretty simple but I accidently put a small black wire on the stud with my large yellow wire and I made smoke. I know know that the small black wire was a ground but my question is did I damage anything? After my brain farther I did hook it back up correctly and turned the engine over to see if it would do that and it did. I have not attempted to start it yet. If you guys have anything please respond.

Maybe you got lucky. All you do is try to start the motor. It it doesn't start, time to check for spark.
