Hi Everyone,

I replaced my stator, trigger, rectifier yesterday. The engine started fine prior to replacments BUT...Whould bog out when I tried to accelerate. ( It would just bog and stall) I was told to replace the stator which WAS oozing in a couple of spots. So I decided while I had it apart I would replace the Trigger, and rectifier at the same time :( I had to remove the flywheel from the hub that is on the center shaft. (8 Center Bolts) Because it was FROZE (I used a puller) I DID not Mark the flywheels position so when I put it back on and tightened down the center 8 bolts... IT WON'T START AT ALL NOW!!. I have a Stationary Metal v shaped mark on my flywheel cover with a line in the middle, and my flywheel has the numbers on a decal BUT I do not know how to... 1. adjust the flywheel in referance to the line mark on the cover 2. What the proper number should be to crank the engine 0-? BTDC or 0-? ATDC or TDC? 3. What the correct timing is for my engine 1979 Mercury 150hp V6. in order for it to start. THE ENGINE ALWAYS STARTED PRIOR TO MY STUPIDITY!! Please help a Newbie out. Oh...One last question...Does anyone know where the BLACK wire comming from the Stator Go? I assumed it is grounded and fastened it where another black wire was fastened. Thank you ALL in advance for any help.

Remove the spark plugs for easy movement and stick a screwdriver blade down #1 cyl. (upper cyl. starboard bank) turn the crank till the piston is to the top of it's stroke, remove the center hub bolts and turn the outer flywheel ring to align with the timing marks

I don't believe that it should make a difference where you put your flywheel back on. I might be wrong... I did the same thing and didn't mark it and threw it back on where I thought it should be, and I either got really lucky, or it doesn't matter. You need a dial indicator gauge that you can pick up at an auto parts store to screw into your #1 cylinder. Manually turn the engine until the gauge reads 0. That is top dead center. Loosen up the bolts on the flywheel, and I believe your "V" mark should be on .462 I do not have my manual in front of me, but you should really look into getting one. From there, you need to check your timing with a timing light. Yes, the black wire coming from the stator is your ground.

Re: Can ANYONE please HELP!!! Timing Nightmare!!

Wiplash, If you install the outer flywheel incorrectly, the timing decal will be in the wrong place. You will not be able to adjust the timing properly. In addition, the magnets in the outer flywheel spin past the stator and generate the spark. They may also be in the wrong place.

Let's see 8 ways to install the outer flywheel divided by 360 degrees of rotation. If you do not have the flywheel in the correct position, it will be at least 45 degrees off.

Re: Can ANYONE please HELP!!! Timing Nightmare!!

Chris1956,

So what would be the proper way to set up the flywheel so that it will START?? Do you happen to know the exact timing for spark? I am NOT getting a spark now. I am going to try and get a manual in the next couple of days but I need to get this boat running ASAP. Once I get the correct timing for start up do I just rotate the flywheel until the center permanent line marks up with the corresponding # on the decal, and then crank the engine? Please help as I am about to SINK this Monster!!! LOL

Yes, but if you check it with a timing light, it will show if your off or not. I guess then I just got lucky when I put my flywheel back on because I was only off 3 degrees. You really need a manual to do this jules. You can mess around with the position of the flywheel and take a guess, but it will take you forever to do.

Re: Can ANYONE please HELP!!! Timing Nightmare!!

Jules, You may be able to buy them at a Discount Marine Store (BoatUS, WesstMarine, Boaters World). You can also order them off the web (this site and many others, plus e-BAy)

The correct way to install the outer flywheel is to turn the flywheel until the top piston (#1) is at top dead center. Use a screwdriver in the spark plug hole to detect this. Now rotate the outer flywheel without moving the inner flywheel until the timing marks are either lined up, or nearly lined up. Now put in some of the bolts and back off the top piston and set it to TDC again and check the timing marks.

Sorry, Chris, I finally get what you are saying... DUH! Chris is absolutely right. Pay no attention to my first post about it not mattering where the flywheel goes on at. If you don't get the manual, and you do it Chris' way, you should be good. Sorry for the confusion jules.

Re: Can ANYONE please HELP!!! Timing Nightmare!!

No one noticed or made any mention of the KEY!!!!!!!

The flywheel hub is keyed to the shaft, without the key all is in vain as the flywheel hub WILL shift position on the shaft and the engine will stop.

Find the key, set the hub in the correct relation to the shaft THEN find TDC on #1 cyl then index the flywheel to the hub.

If you have not shifted the stator position (yes, that makes a differnce also) and the trigger was not shifted, all wiring connected correctly, then it should fire.

Careful, but you should be alright.

Re: Can ANYONE please HELP!!! Timing Nightmare!!

THANKS EVERYONE!!!! :) IT STARTED!!!! Now... I am going to do the Link and sync. I just have one question before I proceed? When I check the timing with the plugs all out for Starting Timing and WOT Timing do I leave the #1 Plug on the wire only? And also I need to ground all other plug wires ( without plugs? Correct? Once again...THANK YOU ALL YOU HAVE BEEN VERY PATIENT AND POLITE with the rookie.

Charlie, Those motors do not have woodruff keys between the flywheel and the crank. The crank and flywheel have a "W" machined into each piece. It only fits one way, and cannot slip.
