a beer is on the line! my buddy and i had identical small motors, mine was an evinrude, his was a johnson. the throttle was a lever on the side, where you would normally see a shifter.....motors had no f/n/r. i say they were 3hp early 70's, he says 4hp late 70's. (this was a looong time ago). motors were notorious for the female spline in the crank stripping, and a common fix was to weld a hex socket to the crank and grind the driveshaft to fit the socket.....fix never lasted that long, but kept ya fishin! both motors , his and mine did the same thing, as well as other identical motors on the lake.
were these early 70's 3hp ,i get a beer.....or late 70's 4hp....he gets a beer? (if someone has a pic of something that sounds like this, it may get me my beer! lol )

They stopped making 3 HP models in 1968. T he 4 HP replaced it in 1969 and ran till 1979.

Scroll down the links on this site and you will find copies of all OMC literature for most all years. The pics you want will be there:

The last of the OMC 3hp models from 1968 had the side arm throttle. They bumped the ponies up to 4hp for 1969, retaining the side arm throttle... So, in effect, you're both right...

the year of that motor, i had two (one for parts) , my friend had one, and there were 3 or 4 others around that all had the same problem with the female spline shearing off inside the crank......so all the ones we ran.....many years ago, are probably recycled into car parts . lol model number a no go!
