Can anyone solve this MERCURY Riddle

The victim: 1995 125hp Merc Carb'd<br />Ran 68 miles the other day ran beautifully...ran good and hard....used 22/5 gallons of fuel and I did notice the oil resevior was low.<br />Changed plugs (gapped to .40 and yes the wires are in the right spot), filled the oil resevoir and gassed up this am....<br />motor is hard starting...rough idle...when I give her throttle there is no hestitation or bogging down and she runs fast with no noticable issues, however, when I bring down to an idle or to troll...she shuts down..and then starts hard again..<br />Any ideas...anyone...anyone at all...<br />Oh and it is one of those 2 + 2 models....idles on 2 cylinders till you give it throttle.

ran fine untill you changed plugs?<br />maybe you got a "new defective"plug<br />or the "gap "is set wrong ..<br />have you tried putting the old ones back in ??

I did regap the new plugs (.40 as it says in Clymers) ....and still have the same problem....Unfortunately I tossed the old plugs, the firing points were burned down to a point.<br />I am thinking that since I did run the oil resevior quite low that maybe I sucked some air into the line.....the mixture in the fuel filter isn't as blue as I think it should be...

Do a carb clean or decarb with Seafoam, maybe clogged jet

I have pulled the #1 carb..it is so clean you could eat from it...I am going to give it a good soaking....and blowing ...then see what happens...<br /><br />I did notice a lot of raw fuel pouring from the lower carb..I think..of course everything runs down hill...<br /><br />It still idles ..then runs rough and stops...abruptly

Bob if you have fuel running from the bottom carb you have stuck or bad inlet needle so do both carbs

Will do....I mean the motor is on my charter boat...so let's see 50 hours a week, 30 weeks a year for the past 10 years....wow...thats 15000 hours and the carbs have never been worked...<br /><br />I have checked to obvious stuff....good spark...clean fuel filter...so now I am playing with the carbs...

Wow, 15,000 hours on the ole carbed Merc 125, good for you..<br />& some people think merc is sub par <br /><br />Bob may I ask you a couple quick questions, is the motor used in saltwater & do you flush the engine after each use ?<br />thanks,<br />Alan

Strictly Saltwater....and is used atleast twice and sometimes as much as 4 times a week. I flush it for 15 minutes everytime it comes out of the water.<br />other than the sputtering it does in no wake zones....<br />She runs like a champ...whether trolling or running full out...<br />I usually run her at 5000 rpm and try never to max it too much.....

Alrighty..carbs back on....everything hookup...ooppps..that stupid little hose on the bottom of the oil tank came off...what a mess.<br /><br />Got everything back together and fired her up....took a little adjusting but I got her to idle smoothly at 1000 rpms..throttles up good and settles back to idle okay...<br />I set the idle mixture about an 1/8th of a turn on the rich side.<br />I will have to go through the link and sinc again..hoping the on the water idle will be about 800 and in forward about 650..we will see.
