Can anyone tell me what the difference is in prop pitch

I have a 90 hp Merc it came with a 15 and a 17 pitch prop what is the difference?

15 is quicker out of the hole, the 17 is higher speed at wot

15P means that prop "theoretically" moves the boat 15 inches with each revolution. The 17P moves it 17 inches with each rev. Since props operate in a liquid, there is slippage to consider. A higher pitch prop may not always increase speed over a lower pitch since the engine must have enough power to twist that higher pitch prop.
