I have a 1976 evinrude 55 horse. I initially thought that i had a coil problem but the local parts place tested it and it was fine. So, i was told that i needed to clean the points. My I have been looking all around on the forums and have found information on cleaning the points. i understand the process of doing this but i have a few questions.

the faq forum says that i need to tourqe the nut on the top of the flyweel. I know how to do it but the nut is 1 3/8 so the only sockets i can find are 3/4 in drive and i only have a 3/8 tourqe wrench??? Im assuming getting a 3/4 in drive tourqe wrench is expensive.

Im hoping that this is something i can do myself.

my boat ran perfect last year and this year when i hit the gas it it will sound like its going to take off normal then bog down and only go like 5 miles an hour.

I have compression checked the motor 145 each cylinder the carbs are clean and coils are good. i was told at my local repair shop that the points are dirty the explanation in FAQ is a littke different than my motor.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!!

well your repair shop does not know what they are talking about. you do not have points, you have a timer base, and stator. power pack, coils.

just what is your problem. rent a torque wrench. i strongly suggest you get an Evirude Service manual.

My
1/4 adapter fits into my
3/8's to 1/2 adapter, which fits into my
1/2 to 3/4 adapter

Depending on the torque, I can use either my 3/8' wrench or my 1/2 wrench.
(the 1/4 just won't go that high)

I've also got a
3/4 to 1/2 and a
1/2 to 3/8 and a
3/8 to 1/4
but they can be bad about breaking things

NAPA, Sears, or any of the major tool guys can set you up with any or all

It probably requires 100-105 ft/lbs of torque. 1/2" drive is the norm for that kind of torque. Some auto parts stores rent or loan tools. Makes a lot of sense if you only need it one time.
