I replaced the bulb on the gas hose and had gas in the tank. Before connecting the bulb I tried to blow on the hose going into the tank but could not. Is there a backflow valve which prevents me for doing that or should there be no restriction?

The check valve would be in the bulb.

How much gas in the tank? It would take a fair amount of pressure if the tank is full or nearly so.

If there is an anti-siphon valve as dingbat mentioned, you won't be able to "blow" through the hose and into the tank, since it has light spring seating a check ball. Something like a 2-3# spring to keep the fuel tank from siphoning, but light enough spring for the fuel pump to overcome the spring a pull fuel. When you try to blow in the hose, you're seating the check ball with more force.
