Can I change a motor by taking out the steering pivot tube?

Sorry that I don't know the teminology but it looks like a pivot tube that the steering cable/rod goes through can be easily removed and I'm guessing it will seperate the motor from the mounting frame? IF so and if they ate the same on my 1986 75 Mariner and the 1991 75 Mercury, can I simply pull the tube out, remove the motor and install the other or is it the wrong way or hard way?

I am not sure if the transom brackets are the same on those motors. You would need to match them up. If they are the same, it should work. I do not know why you want to do it that way, though. It seems like it will be harder to align the tilt tubes, than swap the whole motor.

I would pull the steering out of the pivot tube, unclamp the one, and clamp the other on, then re-install the steering.
