can I change it with boat in water

i have a 1988 bayliner 5.0 chevy engine can i change the lower shift cable while it is docked in the water or do i half to pull the lower unit?

It is a omc cobra 305 chev

You have to pull the drive, and you need a service manual. You should at least read this about adjusting your new cable.
