Can I change?

Quick question. My 454 mercruiser, have short, fat oil filters on them. Couldn’t find one to match at the local wal mart. However the chart says that PH 5 which is the same diameter and has the same seal and threads works on a 454. Makes sense the larger the filter the better. Will this longer filter hurt the engine? I do have the room for the longer one.

Should work just fine. Just need to add the approiate amount of oil to keep your level correct.

SS

Re: Can I change?

Many Mercrusier engines list more than one oil filter depending on space in the engine compartment, particularly on horizontal mount filters. Bigger is probably better, particularly if larger one allows water separation type.

Re: Can I change?

If I remember correctly the short fat is a AC part # PF24 or a PF25 and the tall fat PF35 is the equivalent to the PF24 just bigger. Yes they can be interchanged but always check the gasket location on the filter. The PF25 and PF24 are almost identical except for the gasket location and thus cannot be interchanged.

Here is a comparison of Mercruiser filters that I did that discusses sizes and models.

oil filters

The AC PH35 isn't made anymore. There is a shorter and longer replacement. The longer one is the PF1218.

Make sure you are able to put it on and remove it without tilting it.Sometimes the larger filter wont get in and out as easily as the short one.If you have the clearance, the bigger the better.Double check your oil level after the oil change.Charlie

Re: Can I change?

Put the PH5 on. Didn’t have to tilt it. Oil pressure is the same as with the mercruiser filter. Have to change oil and filter again Sat. and if I don’t hear different, will go back with PH5. Thanks all for the advice.
