removing and deglazing is the only way I know. I guess you could try emery cloth when each piston is at BDC. Others should have a better idea though.

Why do you want to deglaze the cylinders without having replaced the rings?

Re: can I deglaze

I did a comp test got 71-75 psi on all cylinders thought it was low so pulled off head to check and found cyl.wall smooth as glass and a lot of oil in the intake ports. checked bore size within specs. engine starts idles and runs good (all though I think it should do better thr rpms are low ,talked to previous owner to find he always used to much oil didn,t think it would hurt .plan on draining tanks and cleaning and fresh proper mix and I was hoping if I could deglaze it would bring comp. up Trying to save the money on a rebuild for now. By the way the engine is a 1989 Johnson (looper) 200 hp GT. Thank you for your imput

I've had success deglazing before without changing the rings. If they've still got sharp edges. Albeit on small 2 cyl engines though, not sure about the big ones. and I removed them and did it properly.

Maybe it needs to be decarbonized to let the rings float better. You can't always see what's hiding. I'd try that before honing.

Re: can I deglaze

Don't do it without removing the pistons. You need to use a hone to get the proper cross hatch and even removal. With the pistons in place you can't get the very bottom of the cylinder wall. Also, you don't want all that crap falling into your rings and getting stuck in there. Either try a decarb or take it apart and do it properly.
