I'm thinking about rebuilding my LU. At a minimum I need new seals. Can a reasonably handy guy pull it off, and are special tools needed?

If it's something I can attack, what is the best source (price/selection) for older Mercury parts? I see the price of parts varies quite a bit.

You'll need a few special tools, a manual, and should really have a good knowledge of proper shimming proceedures.

Price out new gears and bearings. It should be cost prohibitive vs buying a used unit. Check SEI for a new one.

SEI is making a pretty good product. I've seen great success with the units I've sold.
