Can I dye my sunbrella cover to change color?

I may be buying a used canvs for my boat that is a different color than I want. Is there a dye that anyone knows about that does a decent change in color? I would be going from maroon to blue, which may be tough....

I did at one time find vinyl spray dyes that folks said worked well. I did some vinyl trim pieces to contrast with the seats and it came out great and has lasted a few years. I can't remember what it was but I'd know right away if I saw the product name. I'm not sure if it's supposed to work for canvas covers?

Thanks.

As an upholsterer, I can tell you that you will probably not be able to go from maroon to blue. Your best bet, if you want to try to dye it, would be to go to black. Even then, you will first have to soak the canvas with a heavy detergent/water combo for a day or two to release all of the fabric weatherproofing. If it can't absorb water, it can't absorb the dye. On top of that, it won't last the season. The sun will degrade the dye very quickly.

The paint you're writing about is made by Dupli-Color and by Plasti-Coat. It works pretty well on trim pieces as it stays flexible. It will scratch off and peel eventually, but it's easy enough to reapply. It will not work on fabrics, though.

Maybe if it were white or cream you could get it to take another color.

Maroon to Blue...NO WAY. It would probably look like some strange purpleish color.

I have a similar question, my top has faded and I want to bring it back to its original color, its tan and just needs to be darker.

Any hope for this?

OK, I think you guys are right - ain't gonna happen. Maroon to blue = some ugly mess!

The paint I did my vinyl trim pieces with is SEM brand. I think SEM Color Coat vinyl spray paint. It works better than I thought it would.

You might be able to go to a brown, but I think it's going to be splotchy (if that's a word).

Depending on the amount of canvas and your financial situation, it might be easier to just have a new one made or purchased.

As an upholsterer, I can do a bimini top for around $250. There are some surplus stores that sell tops (with bows!) for around $200.
