Hey guys, I have a 23' steel trailer that is showing lots of rust. It came with the boat i restored. I do fish 50/50 in salt and freshwater. I know the salt is going to eat the trailer up but I was wondering if I sandblasted it and repainted it professionally could it provide a degree of protection until I can get a nice double axle galvanized trailer?

To answer your question... Yes, you can get it blasted and painted.

There are some benifits to powdercoating however a good enamal paint will hold up fine and cost alot less. I painted a trailer I had after blasting with Rustolium and had great results. I sold it to a buddy and he still has it 7yrs later and it looks almost as good as when I painted it.

Hope this helps.

Good Luck!

The problem with launching in salt water, it gets into the tubes and places you can't see or paint.
I have used a few painted trailers for sale water, but they didn't fair too well.
I do paint my galvanized trailers to ad some protection, especially to the hardware, which usually rusts first. Galvanization is a sacrificial coating which wears away with age. Adding paint to the surface does seem to help prolong the process. I have some pretty old trailers that I use in salt water, other than replacing springs and hardware, it's been fine with no rust.
I now have only two painted trailers and I use them for picking up salvage boats and for transport, they rarely see saltwater.

I had my steel trailer (Rocket) rebuilt by a company that built trailers for the National Park Service when I lived in Fla. He sandblasted it, did some welding and coated it inside and out with an "asphalt based epoxy coating". I think it was this:

http://www.roystonlab.com/royston_pdf/Roskote_201_Coal_Tar_Epoxy_Coating.pdf

I have used it in salt water ever since (17 years?), and have never seen corrosion on the trailer. The entire trailer was sprayed (nuts, bolts, brackets, etc.). The down side is it's flat black, but the stuff is as hard as a rock.

Do you know know where you had it done at? Is there any place special that I should use to do the sandblasting and repainting/resurfacing?

Re: Can I have my trailer sandblasted and repainted

I'm currently overhauling my boat trailer. Bought new Disc brake kit with actuator from Northern Tools. At one shop, I got a quote of $1500 to sandblast and paint the trailer. Another shop said that they only sandblast at $125/hour but the 25' trailer is too long for their booth so he couldn't paint it or powder coat it. I decided to prep the trailer myself using an air needle scaler to knock the rust scale off, then use a rotory wire wheel. Wiping the frame down with solvant then I'll use Rustolum primer as the protective base.

Sorry, too many beers and years ago (17 or 18 years)...it was a place in North Titusville, FL. He sure did a nice job, though. I just Googled it, and there is one place called Total Trailer Repair at 424 Lenore Avenue, Titusville, FL , (321)-360-4344 that is in the area that I remember going to. Good Luck, and keep your doors locked....

But I just looked carefully at your info and figured out it's 465 miles from Crestview to Titusville, so my info probably isn't that useful to you. You might give them a call, to see what they say, though.

Unless you can get the coating onto the inside surfaces, it is a waste of time and money. It will still rust thru.
If your paint has any bubbles, you already have pin holes thru the tubing due to corrosion. Smack a 1 inch diameter paint bubble with the pointy end of a welding chip hammer and your likely to poke a hole in the tuibing.
The rust will start first where it is welded.
I have never seen a tubular trailer where the water does not get inside the tubing.

You might be able to save it via blasting, brushing and exotic coatings if it is a channel and beam trailer tho.

But for the time, effort and or money spent to make your steel trailer last, you would be better off saving the dollars to buy the trailer you mentioned instead.

couldnt a guy buy some time having a rustproofing place spray the insides of the tubes with that wax based rustproofing? they do have spray wands with long nozzles for fitting in to enclosed areas.
