Can I jack up my Lund on the trailer to replace bunk boards

I have a 17' Lund Pro Angler and I need to replace the trailer bunk boards, I don't have a place in the water where I can leave the boat while I do the repairs. Can I safely jack up the boat high enough to replace the boards without damaging the hull? I thought about placing a jack aft and forward under the keel as the jack point. Any advice from the pros here is greatly appreciated.

Re: Can I jack up my Lund on the trailer to replace bunk boards

ive never done it myself but ive read of others using this system

lower the front of the trailer all the way down

block up against the transom of the boat. using 2x6 or other wide board to spread the load.

jack trailer all the way up. boat should sit on the blocks and bow support allowing you to work on the bunks.

with a 17ft boat, it shouldnt be all that heavy. spreading out the weight with some spare lumber should be fine whichever way you go.

As beason said but also blocked under the bow: How to Raise a Boat - How the Pros Do It

There should be 2 blocks under the transom, one on each corner, to balance the load. A single jackpoint under the keel would be unstable.

To me, it would be safer and easier to pull the trailer out from under it to work on it. You're half way there by blocking it up.

You could block up the transom, then put the bow on a board wide enough to pull the trailer out, or block up the bow and pull it out in stages. Or find a place where you can lift the bow from the top: a tree branch or a swing set. Or get two stong guys to lift the bow while a third pulls the trailer out; the weight is in the stern.

we used to "launch" a 16' alum starcraft (55 HP) in the yard to paint the bottom, but that was with a roller trailer. If you try that, an old tire is a great thing to drop the stern on.

Better to use slings and a cupla good come-alongs under your shade-tree (if it has a good limb).

I needed to do mine just the other week and got it done.
I measured and bought the wood, got it cut. Applied the carpet and secured it. Bought new screws and brought ever tool I thought I was going to need with me to the boat ramp.
Unloaded the boat and with the wifes help it only took me about 15 minutes to change out the bunks.Threw the old boards back into the boat till I got home to cut them up.
You sure you cant do it the easy way?

I changed the bunks on my G3 1860 one at a time on the trailer. I put a 2x6 about the length of the bunks alongside and inboard of a bunk, jacked it up and blocked it up w a stack of 4x4s and 2x4s on the trailer crossbars until the hull cleared the bunk a few inches, then replaced it and moved to the other side. It took a while, but probly not as long as a trip to the nearest lake and back. My hull has strakes that held the 2x6 in place though.

This is what I did too, just pick a time when you wont cause other boaters issues at the ramp parking lot. Took me 5 minutes to remove the old, and install the new.

Re: Can I jack up my Lund on the trailer to replace bunk boards

Thank you for all the great advice. I purchased the boat from my Brother I Law, he ordered it new, the trailer is not really made for this boat, the bunk boards are too long and stick out back about 6" and the one on the right hits my ff transducer when I load the boat so the brackets and boards need to be shortened a bit plus they have gotten rusty and need to be cleaned up and repainted. A friend told me this morning I can put the boat in his dock for a couple days so looks like I will go that route, just need to find a time when the weather will be good for a few days since his dock isn't covered. Thanks again for the replies.

I know you said you were going to dock it, but here is how I did mine. It was really easy took no more than 45 minutes to do it either. My boat is a 23' boat. And very heavy.

Re: Can I jack up my Lund on the trailer to replace bunk boards

You can buy the bunk carpet in rolls you know. Also the Lund is Aluminum right? you might want to be careful using pressure treated lumber. Usually not a good thing for aluminum. I have no idea if the carpet will protect your boat hull from the chemical reaction that can occur when these two surfaces touch each other. Most board will have a crown in them, I think you want the crown/down so the boat flattens out the board, instead of riding on the middle part of the plank/crown up.

Re: Can I jack up my Lund on the trailer to replace bunk boards

I tend to overthink things.
But I bought pressure treated 2 x4's and selected ones with out knots.
I then let them dry with weight on them to keep them straight. Applied a wood sealer/ preservative to keep water from rotting them again.
Used outdoor carpet from my local Lowes store in 10 foot lengths and they will cut into 1 foot widths for you . At 50 cents a foot, its darn cheap and has a rubberized coating on the bottom side.
I then applied spray on contact adhesive on both the treated wood and the carpet and pinned into place with alum roofing nails.
Used presuretreated wood screws that I had laying around from an outdoor deck build because the pressure treating chemical will not attack the metal and are water proof and lots cheaper then stainless.
These bunks should outlast the boat.
