Can I make a tilt unit from bits and pieces?

My motor is 36 years old and the cost of even a secondhand tilt unit is way too high for the motor's value. I was thinking about making a tilt unit from a hand or electric hydraulic pump and some auto brake line (alloy) tapped into the exiting shock absorber to use it as the ram. I can pick up the parts I need from garage sales and wreckers etc for a few bucks instead of the $600 up if I do it with a secondhand tilt unit or new parts for the various bits.

Will the shock absorber work as a ram? If not, I'll pick up a proper ram somewhere.

Anyone tried this or got any ideas?

Check out www.cook-mfg.com, they make what you are looking for. It's a plate you bolt on and it will trim and tilt the motor. And you can change motors if you ever need to.

Good luck!

Tink--Please post the manufacture, year, and size of motor. You can not use the existing ram on most motors that do not have TNT as the rams are made to bleed either up and down to assist in the tilting of the motor by manual means.
