Can I oil inject a 1985 Mariner 75hp that's not?

Is there any way to do this or is there some kit that can be adapted to the motor to have automatic oil injection? I have no real problems measuring out oil for my fuel when I re-fill the tank, it's just I never feel like I'm getting the optimum ratio mix due to some occasional rough idle and excessive smoke. I know it's due to my accuracy in mixing the 50 to 1 mix my 85 Mariner 75hp 4 cyl requires. It's just a thought I've had for convenience and possibly a more consistent mix. The motor runs excellent at all rpm's. No hesitation or sputtering whatsoever. Just looking for that cleaner burn instead of the typical 2 cycle smoker.

Any thoughts?

Suicide in my opinion. Just about everyone I know with an '80's VRO has removed it and premixes the gas and oil.
It is just a matter of time before it fails and takes out your powerhead with it.
Another thing is that they are slow to deliver the right amount of oil for the rpm being turned. Coming down from high revs to idle, the oil and gas in the line after the VRO might take more than a minute to flow through the carbs so you will smoke for a while anyways. Worse is when you hammer down from idle and put all that torque on the motor as you try to get out of the hole, you will only be getting half the oil for probably longer than it takes to get on plane and that is when your engine needs oil the most.

Well that answered my question. I am much more for longevity of my engine than I am for my own convenience. I just didn't know if it was possible and if there were or were not any benefits to it. You spooked me enough to drop the idea.

Thanks for the tips!

VRO is a Johnson/Evinrude thing and people listen to too many old wives tales about rumored reliability problems. AutoBlend is a Merc/Mariner thing. It can be done. Units are unreliable and parts are NLA. But they are bountiful because people get rid of them and pre-mix. In both cases, water in the oil tank is far more responsible for the bad reputations than supposed mechanical failures. ;)

i find it easiest just to premix in jerry cans. for us canucks, 400 ml oil and 20 litres gas is perfect 50:1. saves a lot of guess work. but better for small boat tanks.

I had an '89 tower (I6) and that was when oil injection was in it's infancy on the older designed engines. It had a remote tank and it wasn't all that great. I think I'd go with the others and recommend premix. I know it's a bit of a hassle, but at least you don't have to worry about running without oil.......as long as you remember to add it. Grin.

I once did a search for aftermarket VRO systems and the couple I did find where priced very high and although quite sophisticated, seemed as though they had far too many parts that presented more of a failure problem than the original.

I have an Auto Blend system in my garbage can right now.
I can pull it back out if you feel like rolling the dice.
Premix is easy and as precice as you choose to make it.

AEROCOOK do not retreive that unit from your refuse pile. I will take the obvious advice and just pre mix it myself as I have been doing. Thanks for all your thoughts on the idea. I too will toss it in the garbage can.
