I found a motor I want for my boat but it is a long shaft and my boat is set up for a short shaft. I talked to the man at the marina and he told me it will be just fine putting a long shaft engine on a short transom. Is that true? It is a 75 evinrude 40hp with electric start, but it can be converted to a short shaft. If I did that where would be the cheapest place to get a short drive shaft, water tube, and shift lever?

They make transom brackets for that reason...bolt on and go.:)

Here is an example. I have found them cheaper than this though.

Jwilkey, I ran a longshaft Fat-Fifty on my short shaft boat for years. You may get a bit more spray ans a bit more steering torque, but that should be the worst. You will loose some speed due to drag, but will not ventilate!

Leave you name and number with the local scrap yard. Variations of that motor are plentiful. They're worth a fair amount as scrap these days. Not insulting yours, I had one for decades. But supply is fairly huge and demand is not so good. Everything you need would still be salvagable in most cases.
