If so how? My tach is clearly reading too high. It says my rpms are 6500 WOT which is simply not true. Or could there be something amis that is causing it to read too high?

depends on the tach model. but before any calibraations its imperative to check RPM's against a known good INDUCTIVE type tach. that will let you know whats happening.

Thanks Rodbolt. I guess I should have checked to see if my tach can even be calibrated first.

Thanks once again.

Boatster

How do you know its reving too high? You may simply have a prop with too little pitch and the engine is indeed reving that high.

but without testing with a known accurate inductive tach its all a guess. :)

Upinsmoke,

I wish it was over reving, Then I'd be able to go faster than currently if I propped up. Right now it is 30 mph on a 13 pitch SS prop, assuming 6% slip, 2.1 ratio at WOT that puts the motor rpms somewhere around 5500 rpms. The motor is designed to run 5600 rpms tops. The boat wasn't supposed to go too much faster I would think. The total weight is probably 800 lbs roughly. Its a shallow V hull 13' rib.

Rodbolt,

I'm going to get a good tach to either test it out or simply replace it. We'll see.

Check the pulse setting on the back of the tach. I don't know how many poles the Suzi alternator has but the teleflex web site has instructions and settings for the various motors.
