I have a very nice 1988 90HP johnson that runs great. The VRO pump was removed before I bought the boat.

Would anyone recommend trying to put the VRO equipment back on the motor, or am I messing around with something I shouldn't.

The only reason I would attempt this is to remove the mess and bother of mixing fuel.

it will cost you around $500.00 to do it. you will have to use a new OSM pump.

I have one I removed today off a 92 johnson 40hp with the wiring and oil tank that you can have. I do not know if it works or not. The boat had been sitting for 5 years and was not running right, so the first thing I did was convert it to premixed and I have started trying to get it to run right.

you do not want a VRO or VRO2 pump. You will want the new improved, and more reliable OMS pump.

Keep mixing !!!!
Use the money on something you really need.
My 2 cents.

Re: Can I replace the VRO pump on my 1988 90HP

Just sold my 86' 140 vro this past summer...but really liked the VRO system. I did upgrade to the OMS pump for fear the 20+ year old original VRO pump would leave me stranded or worse yet stop "oiling".

The only issue I ever had with it was that the "low oil" sensor in the oil tank went flakey and caused a false alarm. Wasn't a big deal as I tended to check the oil level as part of my pre-trip routine anyway, so just disconnected the sensor.

Not having to pre-mix all the time was well worth the few hundred bucks to me....espicially when you amortize that cost over all the years you will presumably be running the boat.

If you do a search you'll get several posts of raging debate about the pros/cons of the VRO/OMS system. In my opinion they are great as long as you do regular annual maintenance (clean oil tank, replace old hoses, replace filter sock in tank, test alarms, etc.) and upgrade to the newer pump.

Good luck.
