Re: Can I save the metal Flake

Best way to find out is to try to fix it. Find an area to do and go through the process in that small part before you do the whole boat. That way you will know what to expect. I'd wrap wet sandpaper around a flexible rubber block, first with 400, then with 1000, then 2000, then compound, then polish. Wax it when it's all done.
The 400 should be used to get the any bumps knocked down, don't go any deeper than absolutely necessary. The 1000 will reduce the scratches from the 400, the 2000 will refine it more, the compound will start it to shine and the polish is to bring up the shine. All wax does is seal it in.
If there is still clear on top of the flake that's how to remove the corrosion to repair the surface.

Re: Can I save the metal Flake

decal can be replaced once removed. was the boat clear coated or is this just gel coat?

if its clear coat then that has to be removed before buffing or re-clearing if its gel it can be buffed once cleaned. from the pics its hard to see the silver that should be red. once you know what the finnish is then most of it can be fixed.

Hey Glenn, I am unaware of a way to remove clear coat, have you seen this done? Perhaps the OP could buff & wet sand to the color then reapply clear.
I just looked again and I think I see some peeled clear on the port gunwale. If it's peeled that torpedoes my process. With peeled paint it becomes time to see a professional.

i havent tested this product yet.....i have a old hull that im going to leave the product on a large spot to make sure it will not damadge the gel coat. i will not recommend a product i havent tested myself but the op seemed happy with the results. sanding the clear coat is a nightmare been there done that which is why im looking at this thread.
