1985 150 HP Black Max XR2

Intermittent spark on No 4 cylinder.
Some days it's there some days it's not. Today it's not. Swapped coils between #2 and #4 and still no spark on #4. Checked voltage with DVA and jumped around but way low at about 25 V. Others at 185V +.
I suspect, based on what I've learned mostly from you guys, a bad SCR in one switchbox.
The outputs from the switchboxes are Grn-Red,Grn-Wht and Grn. Inner switchbox feeds 1,3,5 cyls., outer box feeds 2,4,6.
Can I swap them, that is one bank to the other, and if I can will the non sparking cylinder move to #3 as confirmation.
Seems like I read a post that you could, but I can't find it now.
Thanks, Dave.

Yes you can swap the leads from box to box to test the box--Bob

what you can't change,or swap,is the stator and triger leads to a given switch box.The yellow banded trigger wires, and yellow banded stator wires must go to the same switchbox.

DHP

Thanks Bob and DHP. Thought it would be OK but just wanted to make sure. Have to order some parts soon and didn't want to fry something unnecessarily. LOL.

Dave

Re: Can I swap Switchbox outputs to coils?

OK, running on muffs had spark on #4 at start up today. After she got warmed up good I heard that cylinder drop. Spark tested and sure enough no spark on #4. I turned off motor and swapped the outputs from switchbox to opposite banks. As suspected, the no spark moved to #3 and #4 had spark. Funny thing, when I switched everything back, I had spark all way around again.
I have ohm tested everything on this motor and everything is within specs. I have DVA tested stator, trigger, coils, and the stop circuit. Oh yeah, I took idle stabilizer and rectifier out of the loop for these tests. Everything is within specs at idle. Don't have a tach yet, been waiting 2 weeks for one bought off Ebay.
This has to be a bad switchbox don't you think?
Or, what else could it be? Any thoughts appreciated.

Dave

Yeap!

If it was a trigger you'd lose 2 sparks, not one. If it was a stator, you'd lose 3 sparks, or worst only when the revs got up would you lose sparks.

Definitely a switch box. Well done on some excellent fault finding.

Chris........

Thanks, Chris

Ordered up 2 switchboxes today. I should have them next week and hopefully my tach. Then, off to the lake to give her a go. Hope this does the trick or me and this Merc ain't gonna be buds no more. LOL.

Dave
