Im having issues with my tach on my outboard when i first get in the water its seems fine but after running for about 5 min it starts going all over and then drops to zero and stays there the rest of the day? from what i have read on other posts im thinking the rectifier is dead or on the way out please correct me if i am wrong. anyway i checked the prices on it 35 amp water cooled regulator/rectifier and its alot more then i can afford at this point is it possible to use one of the air cooled rectifiers that other motors use? or would i encounter a lot of issues since ?
thank you

you would need to change out all the components ,stator and timing base ,along with flywheel, your stator output is too high for the little reg/rec.the stator change requires then a different timerbase ans flywheel

Have you checked every connection that the rectifier wire make for any looseness or corrosion under the connections? The intermitent working could be from a loose connection. Have had that happen to me. Is your battery still charging?

Check the wire clamp on top of the motor where the wires leave the rectifier. Had one a couple of years ago where the wires ran into that clamp. They take a sharp bend over the top into that clamp. Insulation was rubbed off but only acted up when the motor got warm. A little piece of plastic cut from a milk bottle and some electrical tape fixed it. Symptoms were the same as you described.

Make sure you take care of this issue ASAP. As the water cooled reg/rec heats up it's possible it can heat up to the point of catching the wiring on fire. Many times we've found the root cause to be that there is air being trapped at the top of the block. Those reg/rec do not cool properly in air.

BTW - the little round units are a rectifier only, they are not a regulator. Even though you do not have the 35 amp system you can use a 35 amp reg/rec.

Re: can I swap water cooled regulator/rectifier for regular rectifier?

Thanks alot guys I have not checked all the wiring or cleaned them up i should have done that prior to posting . I will do that asap and hopefully someone has a sale on them soon so i can get it replaced if the connections are not the issue. is there any way to add extra cooling to the rectifier? ILL be sure to check around the clamp as well to make sure the wire didn't get wore down
thank you!

What often kills them is loss of cooling, as mentioned.
Check your impeller and thermostats.
Defective thermostats (partly open), worn impeller, running low idle, you will be in trouble.
You need a certain pressure in the internal cooling system for the water to circulate properly.
If just a trickle in the 'pee' at idle, time to check/change impeller/thermostats.

ok thank you my boat is currently at the shop getting the whole cooling system done since I'm not sure when the previous owner did it last just want to make sure I'm getting off on the right foot . ill keep my eye on it
thank you
