My instrument panel has an hours meter on it but Id like to replace it with a battery volt gauge. If I decide to re-install the hours meter at a later date will it read the correct hours? How do these work?

No, it can't keep track of hours if it is disconnected. The hour meter is simply a clock powered by the key being in the run position. Some newer motors with computer controls keep track of running hours, but you need gauges matching the motor or a diagnostic tool.

Obviously it needs to have power and ground to operate and yes it can be removed. But why not install it in the engine compartment since it is not an instrument that needs constant monitoring. Just connect the "I" terminal to any spot in the engine bay that has +12 volts on it when key is in the RUN position. The ground lead can connect to the engine block. It will continue to read "key ON" time when the wiring is reattached. Those after market hour meters do not generally read actual engine hours. They read KEY ON time. If you are parked with the KEY ON - ENGINE OFF, the meter will continue running up the hours.

Yeah, I think I will install it under the console that way I can keep track of the hours and If i try to sell the engine or the boat I think that may be an indication of its usage. I bought this boat with 260 hours on it and I believed it because of the condition and age of the boat.
