Can i use any in-line fuel filter (like lawn mower filters)for my outboard?

I need to know because i can get a basic lawn mower fuel filter for my 1/4 inch hose.Does anyone know if this will hurt my motor,because lawnmowers have no fuel pumps and arent 2 stroke engines?And my local marine shop has no universal ones in shop.

Merc,<br /><br />They will work just fine. However I wouldn't use a 1/4" ID for anything but the smallest engines. A 3/8" ID is pretty much the standard.
