I have a Minn Kota c2 -30, 12 volt, 30 lb thrust transom motor. Can I use this as a quick connect for the power wires? They're rated to 600 volts but only 6 amps.

I would say it's safe to say that a big no is a safe answer for this unless somehow this DC motor develops 30 lbs of thrust with under 70 watts of power.

P= VI
12V x 6A =72 watts

Thank you. Minn Kota recommends a 50 amp breaker. Does that mean I need a plug with a 50 amp rating or greater?

You want to have a disconnect directly from the power source?

Find out what the total power draw of the motor is and find a connector that is at LEAST 50% higher rating. Most will say 100% over total power draw...I would think 50% should be safe...cheaper too.

That 6A connector would turn into a bowl of plastic soup in 5 min after drawing current to run that motor if they are asking for a 50 amp breaker.

If you see something with an inductive rating and a resistive rating, the resistive rating is what you are looking for. A inductive rating will always be higher because it's only a large momentary surge of power..only pay attention to the resistive rating.

Your load is going to be a pure resistance load (DC) you don't have to factor in inductance.

Thanks. I'm just trying to go the hardware store route to get a quick disconnect plug for my trolling motor so I don't have to unbolt it every time from the battery. The official Minn Kota plugs are pricey. The plugs I've seen so far don't have the resistive and inductive ratings you mentioned and I sure don't want a fire in my little inflatable so maybe I'll just bite the bullet and spend the $'s on the OEM plug.

If they recommend a 50 amp breaker... you need all connections rated 50 amps or higher.

I wouldn't even give the 6 amp plug 3 seconds.... it would blow like a fuse as soon as you start the motor with its prop in the water.

I commonly deal with >100 amp 50 volt DC power systems. down to under 20 watt 4.0 volt DC power systems

myself...dc/variable ac conversion.

460Vac to DC then back to AC at a varying frequency...

Fun stuff...keeps you on your toes so to speak

Yikes! I don't even know what you guys are talking about. But, that's why I came here to get the skinny from you experts. Thanks again.

A 30# thrust trolling motor is going to draw somewhere in the vicinity of 30 AMPS under worst case conditions. Simple math tells you that the connector you are looking at will be five times smaller than required. 30/6 = 5. You will have a melted connector in seconds. Trolling motor connectors (two or three terminal) are available at any store that sells boating supplies. Walmart has them for just a few bucks. Do it right. Wires on the connector will be about #10 gauge.

Napa will also have connectors and fuses rated for 50 amps, and the prices are lower. I picked up a plug at Walmart for $25

Why anywhere else when IBoats has them. Male & Female for $15.00. Why not use the proper parts for your application and support the folks that provide this forum -- for free!!!!!!!
