Can I replace the UL77V plugs in my 1985 Johnson 175 V6 with L77JC4 plugs? I'm looking for a plug that won't foul as easily at lower speeds. If so, what gap? If not, what other plug?

UL77V (or QL16V) Surface Gap are the only plugs listed for that engine.

Before trying conventional plugs be certain that the projecting electrodes will not come in contact with the pistons !

You may want to try a synthetic, or synthetic blend oil if you're using conventional 2-stroke oil. Usually much better on the plug fouling. If you're not sure, start a new post about oil types and smart folks will chime in. I also heard that opening the plug gap slightly would help, but unsure on that. Good luck!

Check with Silvertip. He put me onto a conventional plug that I have been running for 2 years and have had excellent results in the area you mentioned over my OEM surface gaps.

Additionally, as mentioned, I use Merc's best 2 cycle oil that is probably synthetic but they don't admit to it. By the performance, engine cylinder and plug hygiene, and minimum smoking, it has to be.
