Can my Pontoon handle the weight

I have a 1987 Suntracker 20' pontoon. It currently has a classic 50 Merc on it. I have found a 1977 85 hp Merc. The boat is rated for a 50 hp. I want to find a 70 hp johnson or evinrude, but this 85 is on a boat and the guy will sell me the whole works for $500. I can transfer all the cables and electrics from one boat to the other and then sell the other boat. My concern is if the 85 is too heavy for my pontoon, which already sits low in the aft end of the boat. Input would be appreciated.

If it is already to low and you put more weight on it obviously its gonna be lower yet.

Having said that the 85 can't be that much more weight, its not like you want to go from a 50 to a 150 so it may not make much difference.

And check to see if that is within the rated power, if it is and you can go an inch or 2 lower then why not.

Re: Can my Pontoon handle the weight

you better check year of the 85, nada does not show and 85 built in 1977, they show 1974-1976 85 hp. depeind on model 190- 240 lbs 1987 50 hp 185 lbs.

also check availablity of parts, some of the 70's parts are coming up NLA>

If your plate says 50hp max, do not go above that. It is a coast guard law and if your caught with an over powered boat, they will seize your boat and write you a nice big ticket.

Not true! It is a recommendation NOT a law. My '93 21' suntracker says it is rated for 70 HP and I'm pretty sure your model should have the same transom.

no not against the law to overpower but again if u have insurance they will get up on your back if u get in an accident.

now again it will probably be unsafe to overpower also

Thanks for all of the information - especially about the weight - this toon really fits our needs - concerning the year of the 85 hp, it is actually a 75'. I will put all of this knowledge to good use. GREAT website - I'm a principal, but every night I read the blogs and I'm back in school myself.

a bit late maybe but also consider that the 85 hp i believe uses a distributor and also the 85 hp is not going to give you alot more performance since the hp is measured at the powerhead not the prop... you lose approx 15% hp from the power head to the prop... i'd go with a newer motor that the hp is measured at the prop ( a true hp)

Coolguy is 100% correct..I talked with my insurance agent and a rep from the DNR and both say you run the risk of your insurance company not paying if you are over powered and if you have an accident, even if it is not your fault the other party's lawyer is going to have a field day because you have a larger than recommended engine..there is a lot of engineering stuff going on back there also, none of which I understand...the manufacturers recommendations are there to keep you (and me) safe..

Re: Can my Pontoon handle the weight

this is what the coast guard says.
The United States Coast Guard has an opinion on this frequently asked question, and their answer from their website is reproduced below:
Can I use a bigger motor on my boat than what it's rated for?
It is not a violation of Coast Guard regulations to install or use an engine larger than specified on the capacity label, but there may be state regulations prohibiting it, and restrictions from your own insurance company regarding this.
There are no Coast Guard regulations against exceeding the safe loading capacity, however, there may be State regulations or restrictions from your insurance company which prohibit this. There is a Coast Guard regulation that gives Coast Guard Boarding Officers the power to terminate the use of a boat (send it back to shore) if, in the judgment of the Boarding Officer, the boat is overloaded. There is no fine for this, unless the operator refuses the Boarding Officer's order. We certainly hope that you will abide by the rating, as overloading may lead to capsizing or swamping of the boat.
NOTE: The Coast Guard Capacity Information label is required only on monohull boats less than 20' in length. The label is not required on multi-hull boats, pontoon boats (catamarans), or on any sailboats, canoes, kayaks, or inflatable boats, regardless of length.
As the Coast Guard mentions, local regulations may apply. For example, in the state of Ohio one should be guided by this regulation:
Capacity Plates
(ORC 1547.39 & ORC 1547-40)
No person shall operate or permit operation of a watercraft in excess of any of the stated limits on the capacity plate. When no capacity plate exists, no person shall operate or permit operation of a watercraft if a reasonably prudent person would believe the total load aboard or the total horsepower of any motor or engine presents a risk of physical harm to persons or property.
