Can My Stator wiring be Fixxed ??

Hi all , got a running 402 Mercury outboard ( 40 HP ) , the stator wiring is somewhat coated with a green powdery substance , can this be cleaned with something like a baking soda liquid or something to clean it , furthermore the insulation is falling off these wires , can I use electrical tape to repair that or will I have to cut the wires off close to the stator and solder new wires on , the engine still runs but I`m fearing that they will let go , thanks Bill

i would look into a new wiring harness. i would not trusted a corroded system, to get me home.

I understand about the harness but the stator still works ,, and I`not putting out $ 338.00 here for a new one as this one works ,, can the powder be removed , or new wires soldered on ?? Bill

All I want to know is does anyone see a problem with me cutting the old wires off close to the stator ,, then soldering new ones in place ?? Has anyone done this ???

Yes, it has been done. But for every one that has been successfully repaired there is over a dozen that have failed.

NO SHOP will even attempt it.

As long as it works, leave it alone. The insulation crumbles once touched or moved.

you could try using the spray stuff used on batterys for the corrision, after removing insulation,,,,, then slide heat shrink tubing on the wire and use heat to srink the tubing auto zone parts store have the tubing and spray
just a temp. fix

Thankyou guys , thats what I was thinking , sure a shop wouldn`t do this but it works and I was just concerned about the corrosian and insulation , I am now going to remove the powdery crap and use some heat shrink as suggested ,, Bill

Hi RV I have the same problem aswell I'll be doing the same, but I did see a liquid electrical Tape that I'll have a go with plus the heat shrink.

It's the cheapest price I have found for your stator. Buy a new one.
