Can someone help me with a electric stringer gear ratio question?

I recently got a 1969 electric shift drive geared for a 165 hp engine. The problem is that my engine is a 225 hp, and the gears in that drive were smaller. So does anyone know if my 225 engine will turn that 165 drive? Or will it just mess-up the gears?

That gear ratio could cause you problems ,but your gonna see them in the lower first in the form of broken clutch springs.Getting into these old electrics is not fun and replacing either of those clutch springs is quite a chore.Good luck.

I don't know exactly about this. Will i get more power and more RPM's or just bog it down?

Did a little research today and found ,as I suspected, that OMC did not offer a 165 in 69 They did offer a 155 V6 with their highest h.p. rating at 210.So if you have a 69 drive it won't work well and can't be regeared to accomodate the extra torque as the gearcase changes part numbers in 71 when they did introduce a 235 V8.They also used for the first time a straight 6. So if in fact this is 71 or later youshould be able to regear and be OK.You've already been told by me and captblack this wouldn't work,now the story keeps changing.We've gone from a 165 drive to a 120 and the h.p.s don't add up to production years.WHAT DO YOU HAVE AND MAYBE WE CAN HELP YOU.

Get this though. When I got the drive the puuer housing had cracked. So I put all the upper guts into a 1975 upper housing I got from a junk pile. Then I put the upper on the 1969 lower gearcase. So in fact I can put 21:16 gears into the upper. And I need to do that because the V-8 punches too much tourque onto the prop from the 120 upper gearing and causing the prop to slip from that. The clutches are fine and good, all it was just the gearing. The lower gearcase gear riato is the same for all horsepower and models. It's just the upper gearcase ratios that's a critical factor.<br /> <br /> Path.

Is'nt that what we've been telling you?Gear ratio on these drives is determined in the upper gearcase and interchangabilty is not always possible.Am I to understand that you have now done a complete regear,with proper shimming and all, in just one afternoon?

I actually found out that problem 4 days ago and I called up a friend and told him whats going on and he said it was the gearing. So actually I fixed it in 3 days. That answer ur ?
