Can someone recommend a Wireless-N router?

I just upgraded my DSL to 40Mbs and my old WRT54G is way inadequate. I bought a Linksys N150 (cheapest one) but when I looked up reviews, a majority of reviewers complained about limited range. The router is located on the first floor of my townhouse and I live on the second.I could just try it out but I'd rather not even unbox it until I'm sure it will do the job.

Does anyone here either have experience with this router or can suggest one that might work? Thanks.

I have had this actiontec for a couple of years now, it has worked quite well and is a combo modem and router. It is the same router that many telephone companies issue with their accounts.

I have had good experience with the NetGear family of wireless routers. they seem to do well at longer distances, etc. I use them both at work and at home.

Same here. NetGear has done real well for us.

Thanks for the reply, MT. That particular one wouldn't work for me. I have fiber optic so no modem and the info says 24 Mbps and I'm trying to get 40. Some of their router only products look interesting but unclear in terms of wireless throughput.

To the other responses, I've been checking out Netgear as well

I've been researching since yesterday and the two things most important to me are the most difficult to find out - throughput and range. I understand that nobody wants to commit to a number but I would settle for and "up to". The Belkin website had a little questionnaire that asked How many devices, What do you do online, and Where in your house do you like to use your devices and then recommends a router. For "Where" I picked All over, plus yard/garage. Looks like the $35 router won't cut it but I should stay under $100. I guess it's time to "buy and try."

thanks again.

There is no reason to not buy and try, all of the major retailers will let you return these items if they don't work out for you.

This is what I got used, off of ebay, when I changed over to CenturyLink fiber-optic DSL. It sits on the floor, sideways, at one end of the house (long house) with a small step up to the rest of the house's floor level, with a tiled woodstove alcove and a big honking cast iron wood stove between it and the rest of the house.

It works well in the master bedroom at the opposite end of the house AND in the upstairs bedroom that is mid house.

It was a straight forward set up and I use its wired ports along with its wireless capability.

Hell, I wish I could get anything faster than the pathetic 1.5 Mbps that they offer at my location!

Re: Can someone recommend a Wireless-N router?

Fwiw, I am running a Netgear wndr3400 and it is working well. I am usually running about 6 wired adapters and another 10 wireless devices. The router only has 4 hardware ports but I have a 5 port switch behind my tv for the dvr, appletv, hdhomerun, tv, and bluray.

There are two nice things about this router. It has the dual band N, so you can have the pure n adapters running at a higher frequency range and not down with the cordless phones and other interference. The wireless is broken up into the main wireless and guest wireless. You can segment the guest access so it does not transit the core network. Handy if you have visitors that you don't trust. For me, I use the guest access for my kids. If they are bad I shut them off. They don't have the core network password.

The other nice feature is he USB port. I have a 1tb powered external USB drive hanging on the router and have scheduled backups of my key laptops.

The downside is I don't like some of the rules features. But I accomplish that with he guest network..

Re: Can someone recommend a Wireless-N router?

Well, I'm back finally. I meant to return sooner but got busy for awhile.

I wound up getting a Belkin N600 and just got it set up. Pretty simple, actually. The only instructions that came with it were on a kind of picture card so I had my doubts, but it only took about 10 minutes to get up and working. It's faster but only about 18 Mbps down on the laptop. I'll try it again later this evening and see if it picks up.

Thanks to everyone for your input.

Ha,ha! I hear ya. Still I'm paying for 40 so I'd like to at least get a taste of it. I just ran another speed test and got 39.16 so I guess that's as good as it gets. The router seems to be doing its job.
