Re: Can this filter be cleaned?

Thanks Doc...

Question though, can the filter in there get dirty enough to make a difference ? If so I am amazed that Carter didn't make a way to clean the danged filter... A disposable $97 item...wow.

I already have a FW sep on there...Just had some gas sitting from previous owner and tank crud got in there after I added a cleaner & I think it got overwhelmed.

Thanks again.

yes

i don't think ya clean the filter, you replace the filter. not the whole fuel pump. surely under that bail holding that bowl is a fuel filter. i have a different style fuel pump. but it looks similar and the filter is replaceable under that cover.

this is a little too close up. but this is the fuel filter out of my fuel pump. i'd think yours should be similar..

that goes in the bowl of this fuel pump. under the bail in the can..

the other filter on mine is at the carb. it is a cleanable screen. this goes right at the fuel inlet to the carb..

obviously this is not your fuel pump. but i just can't think yours won't be similar..

I will call tomorrow to check out about that filter...thank you.

One more thing...can the filter be replaced while the fuel pump is still mounted or does it have to be removed?

Re: Can this filter be cleaned?

i replace mine w/o removing the fuel pump. i assume yours is similar w/ the can and bail similar to mine. watch the fuel that leaks out though as ya remove the can. it'll spill. i stick a coffee can under it to catch the fuel. wipe up any mess till dry. and then usually don't start it right away. when i return i use the blower for at least 5 min. + have a sniff.

i had what i think were minor rustys in my fuel tank when i got the boat. the first year i think i did three filters in a row. second year i got down to two. my rustys have been showing up less and less on my fuel filter, so i'm down to once a year again. my point is. i never removed the fuel pump to R&R the filter...

ya might read the service manual too. i've not looked at mine to see. but surely there would be mention of how to R&R the fuel filter in it somewhere.. i'd guess, w/o looking....

Re: Can this filter be cleaned?

Oh jeez so get this.

I bought a new filter for my pump at Westmarine, then opened up the bowl of the pump and wala!

No filter! It is supposed to have one and there was all kinds of rust and junk in it (including paint ripping from the wall of the bowl inside) collecting in the bottom. It was rusing from the inside and now I know why so much debris was getting to the carb filter (past the Fuel/water sep).

Once again the previous owner decided it would somehow make more sense to remove the fuel pump filter?

So let me think the way he did...and ask a question: If the filter is in place and there is a FW separator added...will that somehow affect performance of the boat by restircting fuel flow too much? I know a few guys that have just added water separators and never removed the fuel pump filter.

If the pump is working correctly then no it won't be to much of a restriction.

I have taken apart quite a few of those fuel pumps and cleaned out the valve assembly... you wouldn't believe how much crap gets up in there.

Some people call this "Preventative Maintenance."
"I took it out because it was clogged, an I didn't want the engine to stall!"
So, removing the filter prevented the engine from stalling!

Hehe... Yeah I suppose in a pinch that would make sense...but what of the other 6.9 years you left it out?

I ordered a new pump...tired of dealing with this kind of crap.

Re: Can this filter be cleaned?

I have never liked the little fuel filter thats inside the carb body, but I wish that I could trust the plastic see through style that you put inline.
has anyone found a decent inline see through filter?

The clear ones are only for ourboards...but the white plastic ones I have on my motorcycle and it has always been okay. Not sure about the boat.

Re: Can this filter be cleaned?

just use the oem fuel filters. if the oem thought it needed a extra inline filter, they'd have put one there. + i don't believe there's any uscg approved inline fuel filters for i/o's... short of a water/fuel separator that would be prior to the fuel pump..
