Ok guys i have a few questions, here it goes. I have a 1990 60 hp mariner serial # oc259182.

it was running fine all last year all this year so far until i hade a problem with my lower unit. so i ended up buying a new/used lower unit and put it on and everything was fine for the next 2 trips out.

Even tho i knew i should have chaged the impeller in the new unit i didnt. but the tell tail was peeing fine so i figured it was good. anyway 3 trip out with the new lower unit i was coming in at wot and was crusing fine then all of a sudden i lost a cylinder lost half my power made it back to the dock fine when i pulled the plugs i had a lit bit of aluminum on my top cylinders spark plug so i turned the motor till the piston was at the top to take a look and sure enough the top of the piston was melting.

this is what you guys call detonation i think. long story short isw i thought the motor was junk untill i did a compresson test come to find out that i didnt do any damage to the cylinder i'm getting readings of top cylinder is at 90 psi wich is the cylinder i'm having problems with middle cylinder is at 100 psi and bottom is at 105 are thees good readings? all so i'm thinking i should put a new impeller in to fix the problem.

my question is even tho the tell teal is peeing pretty good is it possable that the impeller is to worn out and at wot is not pumping enough to keep the motor cool at wot.

all so i thought of doing a carb rebuild but if i can get away with just an impeller change that would be great but like i said the motor had no ishues at all before the lower end was changed.

What do you guys think? can this outboard be saved? thank you in advance

with you saying that the pee'er was peeing I wouldnt blame the impellar. I beleive that the detonation is more caused by improper fuel/oil ratio. I would say that running lean on the carb that feeds that cyl would be more likely the culprit.
