Can a electric starter be installed on this Johnson Outboard?
1981, 15HP, Model J15RCI15

If so, what part would be needed? And a ball park figure of the cost?

Yes. An electric start model was available in 1981. You can go to www.shop2.evinrude.com to see parts diagrams and parts lists for your model and the electric start model, which was J15ECIS.

The starter motor alone is $268, though, and the flywheel with the teeth for the starter is over $500. I'm not sure what other parts are required, but there are some, no doubt. It may not be an economical proposition, unless you can find an electric start model with a bad powerhead for cheap. The same parts are used on the electric start 9.9, too.

Not many of these were sold, so it's a little hard to find a broken one.
