We are in need of a voltage rectifier for my buddys 1986 GT 150 but are in the process of ordering one, wont be here till next week. I read,on this site I believe, that we can run with the regulator unhooked and taped off,,is this Ok to do or could we do other damage to motor. It makes sense to unhook it before it shorts the stator out.

Just disconnect the yellow leads going into the regulator from stator, but be sure they do not get grounded!!!!

Should we just unhook all wires from the regulator, and leave the yellow wires from the stator hooked up to the terminal block. The tach is not working either so there is no need for any other tach wires.

Sure, As long as the yellow stator wires do not get grounded, there will be no issue. The ign system runs off the stator, so you will not be discharging the battery while the motor is running. You will discharge it when you start the motor. Charge it up at night, if you can.

If you disconnect the stator wires, the internal voltage will rise sky-high with no place to go, and the generated heat can melt the insulation on the stator coils. If you leave them hooked up to the regulator, they could cause a fire in it. Search this and other sites concerning regulator fires, Merc has the problem also with their 40 amp systems.

Don't run the motor until everything is operational.

With disconnected wires it is no continuity, no circuit, no current build-up. With connected wires, and if the rectifier is shorted, you for sure will burn the stator!!

I'll have to go along with seahorse5 on this one.

So when you do not have any thing plugged into your 115/220 power outlet AC back in your house, just an empty socket - the AC voltage goes sky high???? I'm afraid you are mixing AC and DC output chagre circuit.

Okay, so what happens if you pull the battery cable off of a charging system when running at WOT ?????

A battery cable is regulated DC, or rectified AC depending on system.
What happens is that you blow the rectifier BECAUSE you have a circuit in the AC leads when connecting them to the diode bridges.
If AC leads not connected, no circuit (open) no current.
You may do the following stator test.
Disconnect the AC (yellow) from stator, start the engine measure between each and one of the yellow (AC) to GROUND! Provided your stator is not defect, your voltage reading will be 0.
Measure between any of the yellow and you will get a reading as this will create a circuit= Stator (charging) output test!!!

Hey Hafi, you left off the part about the stator charging coils sharing an iron core, with the ign coils. There may be some addiitonal AC voltage in the ign side, but it will be of no consequence. How many boats are run each day with bad VRs?

Appreciate everyones comments, did pick up a VR so we will not be running with out it,,but I also think that we would be Ok as long as the wires were not shorted out. If there was no circuit completed,,as in going to ground,,there should be no voltage build up.
