Hey guys I have inherited a bass boat fitted with a 1988 Classic fifty mercury motor and I'm trying to restore it but the guy before me messed with the wiring so now I have two yellow wires that come off the stator and they are just dangling I suspect they go to the rectifier but I'm not sure but I think they do also if they do can you tell me which wire goes where on the rectifier. Thanks in advance guys

Welcome aboard.

In the pic below, which I think is for your motor, the two terminals circled should have the two yellow wires. Which wire goes where doesn't matter.

What's the motor serial number to get the right pics and wiring diagram in case I guessed wrong?

Now that you know "where" might want to check"why". Why were the leads loose? Was there a malfunction or such. I'd do an ohm check of the diode assy and the output to battery - before running engine. Then if you think everything is ok, get a helper and as soon as you fire it up, check for some voltage increase at your battery (should have some at idle even though manuals spec a voltage value at 1000 rpm) and put your hand on the rectifier to ensure it's not getting hot. If there was a problem previously, you may have a short somewhere; possibly a burned up stator.....not saying you do, just bears checking out.

And the plot thickens..... The current situation is no spark to the plugs but the guy before me replaced the stator and the CDI module also the rectifier which he never hooked back up. I just literally pulled they fly wheel off and got to the trigger but I can't see any obvious signs of damage and the wires look good. I have ordered a new trigger should be here in about 5 days so I'm hoping that's all it is

GEE the CDI Electronics web page probably has a test for your ign components. My guess is that the PO disconnected the rectifier to see if spark would return. When it didn't, he sold the motor to you.

Yea... Honestly everything will be new after I replace the trigger new plugs & wires new CDI module new starter new stator new rectifier and when the stator gets in it will be replaced so if that doesn't get spark to the plugs then I don't know what else it could possibly be??? Is there any special type of safety kill switch on these motors???

A lot of Mercs had mercury switches which killed spark if motor tilted. See if you have one. They kinda look like condensers, and are connected to the switchbox.

Hey guys, so I replaced the trigger and it didn't fix it, so at my wit's end I pull the switch pack off just to visual inspect it and I found nothing wrong so I went to put it back on and I noticed a black and yellow wire and I thought that was kind of odd so I looked it up and turns out it is a short circuit kill wire so I didn't wire it back up to the switchboard and bingo the engine fired right up perfect spark!!!! Now everytime I hook up the wire to the switchboard box it kills the engine. Why is this??? I even disconnected the wires from the ignition switch and it doesn't effect it at all. Has anyone else had this problem???

The black/yellow wire is supposed to ground at the ign switch, to kill the spark. I would check it for a bare spot that is shorting to ground.

Hey guys I'm back......I just wired a new kill switch so now the the kill switch is working good again but now
When I crank the engine up it runs wide-open I mean it sounds like it's about to blow apart. What couldake this happen?

Now if sounds like carb(s) problems or the linkage associated with them.. :noidea:
