can you have an intermittant stator failure?

I have a 1987 70 hp Mercury 3 cylinder. I am having trouble past 1/2 throttle. The trouble is that the engine will cut in and out, but, otherwise, runs fine anything below 1/2 idle. I have been reading other posts that would lead me to a stator type problem, but my problem is very intermittant. I can go an entire fishing trip with no problems, and the next time I go out, it will happen every time I accelerate.

I have rebuilt carbs, replaced plugs and wire set; have good compression, and new fuel bulb (bulb never gets soft when problem occurs).

Thanks for any help....

-Jason

Yes you can have intermittant ignition component failures. Most of your sensors or charge coils are simply magnetic windings that need a certain amount of resistance to operate. As things heat up or cool down that resistance can change, bringing the unit out of spec and not functional.
