Can you rebuild a VRO2 or should I just buy new?

My dealer said this pump can't be rebuilt but I found a kit online for $135 a lot cheaper than $350 for a new pump. Can it be rebuilt and is it a wise thing to do? I am pretty mechanical but I have not had any experience with these things. Or should I just spend the money on a new one?

Rebuild is OK, but it's only the gas side. No reason not to.

VRO pumps may be rebuilt on gas and air, but not if oil sensor is gone. (According to factory).
However if your mech says 'it can not', I would not trust him doing it, you might as well buy the kit and try yourself.
Check the plastic parts for warping and the valves function.
Add a OEM workshop manual as well (try Marine Engine), and you may perhaps get rid of that mech for most of the works.

They said the diaphragm was weak and not pumping enough gas causing the engine to bogg down. I plan on doing the work myself either way.

Before you start tearing anything down, hook up a pressure tester between the pump and carb and get the pressure VERIFIED!!
Is the 'weak' pressure due to a defective pump or is it a problem on suction side like a sticking anti-siphon valve on the tank top?

WHAT MOTOR? It could be cheaper and easier to just go with a premix 3 line fuel pump. i hate getting only part of the info...........http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=250879

If you are referring to the 150, the VRO/OMS pumps are the best options. You can test your fuel pump using this chart: http://www.maxrules.com/graphics/vropics/VROflowchart.JPG

The repair kit will correct a bad membrane if that's the problem. A dirty, blocked pulse limiter can mimic a bad membrane.

If you don't have the service manual to follow, Bill Kelly has the instructions for the rebuild on his website. Go here and scroll down: http://www.maxrules.com/fixomcvro.html

It's a 99 150 HP J150PLEES. I have a 30 gal tank so I don't want to premix.

That engine at least has a vacuum alarm, which should rule out the anti siphon valve.
However it has the vapor chamber that might cause some troubles as well.
I repeat the suggestion of hooking up a manometer/pressure tester between the chamber out and fuel rail.
If a pump capacity problem, pumping the bulb when running should eliminate the problem??

Will any 4 wire pump work on my motor? I am trying to figure out the difference between pumps. From what I can tell you have 3 or 4 wire and from there they have different style fittings. Is this correct? I have removable fittings on my pump and have seen several the same way but the part numbers don't match on the evinrude parts site.

The three wire pumps are outmoded by many years and should not be purchased. The alarm system on your engine is not designed for the older system.

Your OMS pump has removable fittings as should your replacement pump.

The replacement part number for your replacement pump should be 5007420; any number below that is old stock.
