Can You Repair A Leaking Bearing Seal with Glue? Yes, according to my parts man

I just replaced the bearing seal my upper housing that goes around my drive shaft, aft of the universal joints. It?s part #23 in this drawing. http://www.volvopentastore.com/Uppe...on_id.936838775--store_id.366--view_id.772654

My pressure test failed and soapy water sprays are showing an air leak between the metal outer edge of my new bearing seal and the casting of the upper housing. That seems strange to me. I have never seen this happen in any seal application. I just spoke to the parts house and they are sending me a new seal. The parts man (50 years in the business) also gave me this tip.

He said I should put some of the non-permanent loctite adhesive around the outer edge of the new bearing seal before pressing it in place. Does anyone have any experience or thoughts on this? Also, if you can answer yes to the previous question what kind of adhesive/gap filler would you recommend? All thoughts, comments and tips are welcomed appreciated.

I've used #2 Permatex to 'set' seals. It lubes the rim for a smoother installation and it could provide minimal sealing for a slightly imperfect fit.

Your parts man is giving your solid advice. Not too much though it will compress out to nearly nothing if the fit is correct.

I always use a thin coat of red Locktite (271) for all seals of that type. It seals it and keeps it in place at the same time. Never had one leak.

Originally, this bearing seal was not leaking, it was an Oring that was the problem. I only replaced the bearing seal just trying to do good PM while I had the outdrive torn down. I bought new parts expecting a simple repair to be just that, "simple". Figures, just MY luck! I guess I shouldn't be surprised at your responses, but frankly I am. Thanks for your valuable input. I learned something today.

did it to 225,000 gear cases last year on snow blowers. its good advice. the loctite lubricates the process, then seals the seal to the casting.

My local auto parts house didn't have the "Loctite" brand 271. So, I bought Permetex 271000 (the red locking thread stuff). I hope this product will work just as well as the Loctite. Permetex appears to be the same as Loctite, just a different manufacturer. Any thoughts about using the Permetex instead of the Loctite?

Also, how long should I let this stuff cure before I do the pressure test? I looked at technical data sheets on the Internet for both Loctite and Permetex. Loctite sets in 10 minutes and fully cures in 24 hours. Permetex sets in 20 minutes and cures in 24 hours. Right now I’m thinking I should let it go the full 24 hours before I pressure test. Thoughts/Suggestions based on your experiences?

Look really close at who own's the Loctite and Permatex brands.. Isn't it amazing that Permatex calls it 271 also. The lawyers would have squashed that if it wasn't the same company.
