before i get the normal " buy a manual" i have one on the way but am trying to get this thing in the water a.s.a.p.....

i have a 1971 100 esl ....have benn told it has points and condenser and that it does not .....so let me tell you what i see when the fly wheel comes off and maybe you can tell me what to look for ......

ok when the fly wheel is off i see what i think is the stator ..( a light blue color with four plug wires and one plug wire to the top off the motor.....after the stator comes off there is a black cup (like i rotor) with a metal ring at the bottom of it .....after that comes off i see the top off the crank and plate with some wires on it the wires look like they connect to two little "j" hooks that one touches the crank and the other is just off it ....and when that comes off there is nothing else .....

there is no spark to the motor ....can any one tell me if there are points and if so what am i looking for ...........help please ....i am not a outboard guru but can take directions pretty well ......

Sounds like the J hooks you describe are points. If they cause the contacts to open and close as you rotate the crankshaft then they are points.

The thing with the four plug wires is the
distributer cap.

Before you can take that off, you had to remove a
two screws which bind a ring around the distributer
cap. This ring is the stator, it has a number of
coils of wire with two wires leading out from under
the flywheel.

The round black thing under the distributer cap
is the rotor. It is keyed into a notch on the
crankshaft.

Under the roter is the points. There are two sets
of points on this motor which are driven by
bulges in the crankshaft. (two points, two bulges
results in four closes of the point wires per
rotation of the flywheel.

With no spark at all on any of the wires, there
is three suspects...

1) Wireing, verify that amplifier (big black box
on back of motor (possibly silver). Has power
when the ignition is on. Verify that the points
are indeed closing 4 times per rotation. etc

2) Coil. There is only one on this motor, verify
that it isn't open and that the big black wire from
the coil to the rotor isn't open.

3) Amplifier....Yuck, Joe Reeves has posted numerous time how to test these Battery Capacitive
ignition boxes with light bulb, search for it on
this site. Expensive to replace.

Good luck,
Mike
