I'm going up to Saskatchewan next week. The travel agent says I just need a cerified birth certificate and a drivers license.. Others say a passport.

Input? By the way, I'm flying in from Minneapolis on a major carrier.

Re: Canadian Customs

Living in Vermont, Canada is our Northern boarder (yes VT is that far North!). Drivers license is all that has ever been needed to cross the boarder. Have a birth certificate handy but I doubt it will be needed.

Djohns unless you look or act suspicious I doubt you will get slowed down.

Bob

I'm from New Hampshire. I go to Canada about once every 2 months for the weekend. Its about a 3 hour drive, but its great up there. I've never needed anything but my drivers license.

But Bobs right...Bring your birth certificate just to be safe.

Better to have it and not need than not have it need it :)

Re: Canadian Customs

9-11 may have changed some of the security requirements for entry into certain countries.

It may have always been this way, but in Mexico, you can drive accross the border with just a driver's licence. If you go into the country past a certain distance (100km I think) you need either a DL/birth certificate or passport.

If you fly into anywhere in Mexico, you need either a DL/birth certificate or passport. A spouse may need to also have a marriage licence if the DL name is different than the birth certificate.

Since you are flying in, more than likely you will pass through customs, whcih certainly have become tighter.

Your airline will know Candadian regulations for sure.

Have a nice trip.

Re: Canadian Customs

I have always found the Canadian customs personnel to be easy to work with and have had a very minimal amount of hassle. The American Customs are another story...Getting into Canada with a drivers liscense is a piece of cake. Getting back into the US is harder. If you have a passport it makes it easier.

I live in Washingotn state and from people I have talked to, occasionally you need your birth certificate. Not really to get into Canada but to get back into the US. everyone is right the rules have changed since 9/11.

Re: Canadian Customs

Went on a business trip and got the whole workover. "Why are you here? Do you have a work permit for Canada? Where is your passport?" May have just been a bad day for the guy, but it took me over an hour to convince him I was just going to review the performance of a guy that worked for me in Toronto. The only redeeming thing was watching the eastern european female "cousins", dressed to the kill of course, of some guy waiting out by the curb to pick them up trying to convince the agents they were just "visiting" and weren't there to work. Their lack of skill in the English or French language added to the entertainment.

Re: Canadian Customs

I live within in a stones throw of the Canadian border and take frequent trips to the otherside. Normally, there aren't any problems, only need a drivers lic. However, I have been asked for a bith certificate. Defintely take it with you, if you don't have that, or a another form of ID to prove you are a US citizen, it can be a very long process to get through, either side. This is a worst case scenario however. In addition some border posts prefer not to take the voters reg card as proof. The reason being it is rather easy to get even though one may not be a citizen.

Re: Canadian Customs

djohns, if you get stuck in Canada drop us an e-mail. Tell the boarder patrol to get on-line. We will all "vouch" for you.....and with some luck when the boarder guards post the question on iboats on who you are (It better be in the right forum!!!!) and where you are from....we will respond.

For a slight fee :D we will vouch in your favor!

Have a great trip.

Bob

You should be fine with a drivers licence as long as it has a picture on it. I live about 5 miles of Maine-New Brunswick border and we go back and forth all the time. We had a harder time getting back into our own country one night than we ever did the U.S. since 911.

Re: Canadian Customs

Driving into Canada is not the same as flying there.

Foreign visitors are required to have a valid passport, or other proof of citizenship (birth certificate) and a photo ID.

Imagine the dumb look on people's faces who do not have the proper ID to enter a foreign country.

We do however, love our northern neighbors :)
