I have looked everywhere and yet I cannot find a low cost GPH (Gallons Per Hour) fuel consumption meter or computer!

I have found Floscan etc who will sell you a $300 gauge and sender but I'm amazed that there is no $50 unit out there as the technology is very simple.

An inline flow sensor can be found for about $20 and an LCD display is only a few bucks so it should be possible to have what is probably one of the most useful instruments (especially with gas at $4+ a gallon) for around $50 retail.

I'm almost tempted to design and build one myself based on a PIC device.

But will it provide readings in both metric and U.S. measures, fuel remaining, fuel used since reset, calculate instant as well as average, average per tank and average since reset which most of these units do. Your plan would likely result in an instantaneous fuel flow only unless you expanded the capability. Instantaneous readings are helpful but the other "averages" and fuel remaining capabilities are far more useful.

This one was available for $120 when I bought it. The name has changed but I don't remember who bought the company. A search for Navman 2100 may turn up a new one somewhere.

If you end up with one of these, mount the transucer perfectly vertical and by all means mount it in a nice cushioned mount (I made mine) too isolate it from vibration. The turbine is really sensitive and they do not like vibration. It is also suggested that you install a filter in front of the transducer to prevent any small particles from shredding the turbine.

If you can't find one, PM me. I just replaced my FloScan gauge and I'll give you my old one. The total gallons used LCD doesn't work anymore, but the needle indicating how many GPH being burned works just fine. Then you only have to get the sending unit. I even have the install instructions.
